The Mid-Autumn Festival marks unity, connection, and a sense of family within the Sampoerna Academy L’Avenue community. It celebrates a long tradition of reunion, harvest, and the balanced harmony of the full moon. The festival represents gratitude and togetherness, as the full moon is seen as a symbol of completeness and the strength of family bonds. It is a time to reflect on the importance of staying connected and appreciating those around us.
The festival dates back to the Zhou Dynasty, when emperors offered thanks to the moon for agricultural abundance, good fortune, and prosperity. Over time, it grew into a cultural celebration centred on gathering, sharing food, and honouring the harvest season.
The event was organised by the dedicated Mandarin teachers, who guided students through the traditions of China and helped them understand the meaning behind the celebration. On Friday 10 October, students took part in making simple mooncakes using Oreos. They separated the biscuits, placed the cream into a bowl, crushed the biscuits, and mixed them with milk. They shaped the mixture into a ball, added the cream to the centre, pressed it into a mould, and formed their mooncake. Afterwards, they either ate it or took it home to refrigerate and share with their families.
The festival reminds us that staying connected to family and culture matters more than anything.
