Celebrating Math Through Poetry: The Pi-Ku Station

Our Grade 9 students took on the role of leaders and facilitators in the exciting Amazing Race Activity. Each station was designed to challenge Grade 7 and 8 students with engaging, mathematics-based tasks.

One memorable and creatively unique station was the Pi-Ku Station, led by Janina, Kieran, Kimi, and Zaneta. This station invited Grade 7 and 8 students to blend mathematics with language arts by composing a Pi-Ku — a math-inspired version of the traditional haiku.

Instead of the usual 5-7-5 syllable pattern, the Pi-Ku follows the digits of Pi: 3.1415, which were adapted into a 3-14-15 syllable structure for each of the three lines. Students were challenged to craft original poems centered around the themes of Pi, circles, or anything related to mathematics.

This cross-disciplinary activity not only highlighted the students' creativity but also deepened their appreciation for the beauty and interconnectedness of math in everyday life. The station was a hit among participants, and the energy and enthusiasm shown by all the students truly captured the spirit of the day.

Here’s a compilation of some of the Pi-Ku done by the Grade 7 and 8 students:

I like math
Protractor, ruler, calculator are tools we need
Algebra, functions, Pythagoras’ theorem are all in math.

I like Pi
It has many circles to solve for this equation, yes
Angles has so many lines, it solves for x and y, also Pi

Sweet, sweet Pi
For your decimals are infinite and forever long
Three point one four one five nine two six four and a lot more

Math is fun
Pi’s digits consists of three point one four five nine two six
Why do Mathematics asks us to find x and explain why

Protractor
Mathematics makes people excited and Ms Mel is great
Angles are complicated and exhausting but so useful

Pi is long
Math is very fun to do on an everyday basis, right?
Math is amazing and is used in our lives, don’t you agree?

Pi is cool
It must not make sense to rules in school, but makes me drool
Learn your Pi, for it must not be taken for granted in life

Math is fun
Mathematics is taught by our teacher Ms Mel, she is great
Math is very hard and has a very very long equation
